The pineal gland, located deep in the brain, secretes melatonin in response to darkness, helping regulate the body's circadian rhythm (sleep-wake cycle). Light suppresses melatonin production. Disruption of the pineal gland's function is associated with sleep disorders. The pituitary gland, by contrast, is the 'master gland' controlling other endocrine glands.
