Extinction in classical conditioning occurs when the conditioned stimulus (CS) is repeatedly presented without the unconditioned stimulus (UCS), causing the conditioned response (CR) to gradually weaken and disappear. Importantly, extinction does not erase the original learning; spontaneous recovery (re-emergence of the CR after rest) demonstrates the original association is retained in memory.
