The Biopsychosocial Model, proposed by George Engel (1977), argues that health and illness result from the interaction of biological (genetics, physiology), psychological (thoughts, emotions, behavior), and social (relationships, culture, socioeconomic status) factors. It replaced the reductionist biomedical model (which viewed illness as purely physical). This model is the dominant framework in modern health psychology and clinical medicine.
