Repression is Freud's foundational defense mechanism in which the ego unconsciously excludes anxiety-provoking thoughts, memories, or impulses from conscious awareness. Unlike suppression (conscious avoidance), repression is automatic and involuntary. Freud believed that repressed material does not disappear but continues to influence behavior, dreams, and psychological symptoms. It is the basis of his psychoanalytic theory of neurosis.
