On the right side the recurrent laryngeal nerve hooks under the right subclavian artery; on the left, it loops under the arch of the aorta (related to the ligamentum arteriosum) — an important surgical landmark and a reason left-sided nerve palsy is associated with mediastinal/aortic pathology.
