The femoral nerve supplies the quadriceps femoris (knee extensors) and provides sensation to the anterior thigh, continuing as the saphenous nerve to the medial leg; it can be injured in pelvic fractures or during femoral vessel procedures given its close relationship in the femoral triangle.
