Surfactant, a phospholipid-protein complex, lowers alveolar surface tension (particularly in smaller alveoli, per the Law of Laplace), preventing alveolar collapse and reducing the work needed to re-inflate the lung on each breath; its deficiency in premature infants causes neonatal respiratory distress syndrome.
