Thomas Hardy's novels Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891) and Jude the Obscure (1895) caused public outrage primarily because of their perceived heresy — they challenged conventional Victorian religious morality, attacked the institution of marriage, and questioned Christian doctrine. Jude was even called 'Jude the Obscene' and Hardy burnt his mail in response to hostility. He never wrote another novel after it.
