Charles Hockett identified 13 design features (properties) of human language that distinguish it from animal communication systems. These are collectively known as Linguistic Universals or 'design features of language.' They include: arbitrariness, productivity, displacement, cultural transmission, duality of patterning, and others. These features together demonstrate the uniqueness and complexity of human language.
