Arnold Bennett wrote The Old Wives' Tale (1908), one of the greatest English realistic novels of the Edwardian period. It traces the lives of two sisters — Constance and Sophia Baines — over fifty years in the Five Towns (the Potteries district). Bennett is associated with the Naturalistic school in the tradition of Balzac and Zola.
