The poets of W. H. Auden's circle — including Auden, Stephen Spender, Cecil Day-Lewis, and Louis MacNeice — were collectively known as the 'New Signatures' group, named after Michael Roberts's 1932 anthology New Signatures. They were politically left-wing, socially engaged, and influenced by Marxism and Freudian psychology. 'New Lines' was a later 1956 anthology associated with the Movement poets.
