The group of educated Elizabethan dramatists — including Christopher Marlowe, Robert Greene, John Lyly, Thomas Kyd, George Peele, Thomas Lodge, and Thomas Nashe — are collectively known as the University Wits. The name reflects that most were Oxford or Cambridge graduates ('wits' meaning clever men). They transformed English drama in the 1580s–90s, bridging the gap between medieval drama and Shakespeare.
