Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–1889) was a Victorian poet who was radically modern in technique. His inventions of 'sprung rhythm' (a metrical system based on stress, not syllable count) and 'inscape'/'instress' (the unique inner form of things) anticipated 20th-century modernism. His poems were not published until 1918 (Robert Bridges's edition), making his influence primarily a modern phenomenon.
