Pragmatic competence is the ability to use language appropriately in different social contexts — knowing what to say, how to say it, and when to say it. This includes understanding indirect speech acts, politeness conventions, implicature, and contextual appropriateness. Dell Hymes called this communicative competence. Chomsky's linguistic competence covers phonology, syntax, and semantics but not social appropriateness.
