George Orwell's real name was Eric Arthur Blair (1903–1950). He adopted the pen name 'George Orwell' in 1933, reportedly choosing it to spare his family embarrassment when publishing Down and Out in Paris and London. 'Winston Smith' is the name of the protagonist in his dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949).
