Uncle Tom's Cabin; or, Life Among the Lowly (1852) was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was a powerful anti-slavery novel that depicted the brutal conditions of American slavery and is widely credited with helping to energise the abolitionist movement. President Abraham Lincoln reportedly greeted Stowe by saying, 'So you're the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war.'
