Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) created Sherlock Holmes, who first appeared in A Study in Scarlet (1887). Holmes, the brilliant detective of 221B Baker Street, and his companion Dr. Watson became the most famous fictional detective duo in literature. Edgar Allan Poe created the earlier detective character C. Auguste Dupin, who influenced Holmes; Agatha Christie created Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.
