The Society of Jesus (Jesuits), founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, was a Catholic religious order established specifically to combat the Protestant Reformation and spread Catholic teaching through education, missionary work, and theological debate. The Jesuits were central to the Counter-Reformation. Baptists, Protestants, and Calvinists are all Protestant groups.
