The Grammar-Translation Method (dominant in the 18th–19th centuries, still used) emphasises grammatical accuracy — memorising grammar rules, translating texts between L1 and L2, and studying language as a formal system. It focuses on written language, reading classical texts, and explicit rule learning. It does not prioritise oral communication, fluency, or listening — hence the criticism that students can translate texts but cannot speak the language.
