English belongs to the Germanic branch of the Indo-European language family. Specifically, it is a West Germanic language, related to German, Dutch, Frisian, and Yiddish. It developed from the dialects brought to Britain by the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. While English has absorbed enormous vocabulary from French (a Romance language) and Latin, its grammatical core and basic vocabulary remain Germanic.
