Vast numbers of medieval manuscripts were destroyed during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries (1530s), when monastic libraries — which had preserved manuscripts for centuries — were broken up and their contents dispersed, sold, or destroyed. While the Norman Conquest and printing also affected manuscript survival, the Dissolution was the single most catastrophic event for medieval book preservation in England.
