ATP synthase (Complex V) is embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It uses the proton gradient generated by the electron transport chain (chemiosmosis) to synthesize ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate. It is also found in the thylakoid membrane of chloroplasts during photosynthesis.
