During interphase, chromosomal DNA is in a loosely coiled, extended form called chromatin. This extended state allows access to DNA for transcription and replication. Chromatin consists of DNA wound around histone proteins (nucleosomes). Chromosomes only condense into the compact, visible form during cell division.
