The nucleolus is the dense, non-membrane-bound region within the nucleus that is the site of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) synthesis and ribosome subunit assembly. Ribosomal genes (rDNA) are transcribed here by RNA polymerase I to produce the large rRNA precursor that is processed into 28S, 18S, and 5.8S rRNA.
