The plasma membrane is asymmetrical because the two leaflets (monolayers) differ in protein and lipid composition. Specific proteins are found only on the inner (cytoplasmic) or outer (extracellular) leaflet. Glycoproteins and glycolipids face outward only. This asymmetry is functionally critical for signaling and transport.
