Magnesium ($Mg^{2+}$) is the central atom of the chlorophyll molecule, occupying the center of the porphyrin ring. Without adequate magnesium, plants cannot synthesize chlorophyll, leading to chlorosis (yellowing of leaves). Magnesium is also a cofactor for many enzymes including RuBisCO and ATP synthase.
