Blood group O negative (O$^{-ve}$) is the universal donor for red blood cells because: (1) type O red cells lack A and B surface antigens (no immune reaction from ABO mismatch), and (2) Rh negative cells lack the Rh(D) antigen (no Rh reaction). O$^{-ve}$ blood can be transfused to any recipient in emergencies.
