A species is defined as a group of organisms that share common morphological and physiological characteristics, can interbreed naturally, and produce fertile offspring. This is the Biological Species Concept (Ernst Mayr, 1942). Genus is the next level up in classification; species is the most fundamental unit of biological classification.
