In the light-dependent reactions, water acts as an electron donor. Water is split (photolysis) by Photosystem II: $2H_2O \rightarrow 4H^+ + 4e^- + O_2$. The electrons released from water replace those lost by the excited chlorophyll P680 molecule. Oxygen is a byproduct of this water splitting.
