Telomeres are the protective caps at the ends (termini) of linear chromosomes. They consist of repetitive DNA sequences (TTAGGG in humans) bound by specific proteins (shelterin complex). Telomeres protect chromosomes from degradation, end-to-end fusion, and prevent recognition as DNA damage. They shorten with each cell division (Hayflick limit).
