The synaptic cleft is the narrow fluid-filled gap (approximately 20–40 nm wide) between the presynaptic terminal (axon terminal/synaptic knob) and the postsynaptic membrane (dendrite or cell body). Neurotransmitters are released from synaptic vesicles into this cleft and diffuse across to bind postsynaptic receptors.
