An axon is the long, slender projection of a neuron that conducts electrical impulses (action potentials) away from the cell body toward other neurons, muscles, or glands. Axons can be extremely long (up to 1 meter in sciatic nerve). Dendrites are shorter, branched projections that receive incoming signals.
