Skeletal muscle fibers are multinucleate (multiple nuclei) syncytia formed by fusion of many myoblasts during development. The nuclei are peripherally located (just beneath the sarcolemma). This multinucleate arrangement allows coordinated regulation of the large volume of cytoplasm in these long muscle cells.
