Second Generation computers (1956–1963) replaced vacuum tubes with transistors, invented at Bell Labs in 1947. Transistors were smaller, faster, cheaper, more reliable, and consumed less power. Examples: IBM 7094, UNIVAC 1107. Third generation used ICs; fourth used microprocessors.
