Herman Hollerith invented the punched card tabulating machine in 1890 for the US Census. His company later became part of IBM. Joseph Marie Jacquard earlier used punched cards to control looms (1804), but Hollerith's adaptation for data processing is the direct precursor to modern computing punch card systems.
