A heat engine must: (1) operate in a cyclic process so that it can continuously perform work, and (2) operate between two temperature reservoirs (a hot source at \(T_H\) and a cold sink at \(T_C\)) with \(T_H > T_C\). Both conditions are essential as stated by the second law of thermodynamics.
