LANDSAT is the oldest and longest-running Earth observation satellite programme, initiated by the USA. The first LANDSAT satellite (originally called ERTS-1) was launched in 1972, making it the pioneer in civilian remote sensing programmes. NOAA satellites began later (1970s weather satellites), and SPOT (France) was launched in 1986.
