The Himalayan mountain range was formed by the convergence (collision) of the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate, which began approximately 50 million years ago. As the Indian subcontinent moved northward and collided with Eurasia, the intervening Tethys Sea sediments were folded and uplifted to form the Himalayas. This is a classic example of continent-continent collision.
