Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up reactions by lowering the activation energy (\(E_a\)) of the reaction — they provide an alternative reaction pathway with a lower energy barrier. Importantly, enzymes do NOT change the equilibrium constant or the thermodynamic spontaneity of the reaction; they only affect the rate at which equilibrium is reached.
