Cement manufacturing involves burning limestone and other raw materials at very high temperatures (around 1450°C). This process releases both sulfur dioxide (\(\text{SO}_2\)) from sulfur-containing minerals and nitrogen oxides (\(\text{NO}_x\)) from high-temperature combustion reactions with atmospheric nitrogen. Both are significant air pollutants contributing to acid rain and smog.
