Response cost is a specific behavioral technique in which a student loses a previously earned privilege or reward as a consequence of misbehavior. It is distinct from punishment, which delivers a new aversive consequence. Response cost is part of the behavior modification framework and uses loss of positive reinforcement as a deterrent.
