Catalase is an enzyme that breaks down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. It is found in many living cells and works best at a near-neutral pH. The optimum pH for catalase is approximately 7. At pH 1,3 or 5 (acidic conditions), the enzyme denatures or shows reduced activity.
