As of 2024, GRE scores are calculated using a revised system that reflects recent changes to the exam structure. The GRE now consists of three main sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing.
Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning Scores
The Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections are each scored on a scale of 130 to 170, with 1-point increments
The process involves two steps
Raw Score Calculation: This is the number of questions answered correctly in each section
Scaled Score Conversion: The raw score is converted to a scaled score through a process called “equating”. This ensures that scores are comparable across different test versions.
Analytical Writing Score
The Analytical Writing section is scored differently. It uses a scale of 0 to 6, with 0.5-point increments. Each essay is evaluated by a human rater and an e-rater developed by ETS
If the scores match, their average becomes the final score. If they differ, a second human rater is brought in, and the final score is the average of the two human ratings
Total GRE Score
The total GRE score is calculated by adding the Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning scores, resulting in a range of 260 to 340. It's important to note that the Analytical Writing score is not included in this total.
Changes in GRE 2024
The GRE has undergone significant changes in 2024. The test duration has been reduced to 1 hour and 58 minutes. The number of questions in both Verbal and Quantitative sections has been reduced to 27 each. The unscored section and the 10-minute break have been removed
Score Reporting
GRE scores are now reported to institutions within 8-10 days, faster than the previous 10-15 day turnaround, this allows for quicker application submissions, which can be crucial for meeting deadlines.
